One of Pooter's shouts references the Ketchikan Daily News as a "gossip-mongering shitrag."
Pooter, in all his obscene eloquence has piqued my curiosity as to what stemmed this outburst. I am currently not in my hometown of Ketchikan and thusly haven't been able to remain timely with my KDN reading.
Pooter if you would explain what article prompted this shout, I'd be interested to know. Thanks.
Also, our paper kind of sucks in general. All the locally-written articles are straight-up crap, and the rest is AP propaganda reprinted. Our newspaper is just like, a monopoly on the semblance of news in this little town. Front page is either unconfirmed rape-related personality smear shit, or it's VANDALS TARGET ALASKA DEMS, IT MUST BE SARAH PALIN. Really, the media blows, but the KDN is literally a conspiracy of undutiful, shiftless douchebags: or, as some call them, "'journalists'". But worse, because it's Ketchikan.
Attempting to engage in an online discussion with Pooter will invariably net only a response based solely upon name-calling and inflammatory, accusatory rant-banter.
Again, you're a patronizing asshole. And it's not my problem. I guess, if I address the issue uncouthly, and you don't address the issue at all but rather prefer to publicly fetishize your superiority, neither of us is really doing his job. All I meant to do so far was to insult the Ketchikan Daily News while simultaneously advancing my arguments. I find it less pretentious and more fun that way. Maybe when you refer to name-calling you mean what are called 'adjectives'? This is not an involved argument. There are no issues of honor at stake here. You have put forth nothing which can be intellectually digested to the exclusion of obscenity, nothing which elevates the argument or yourself. Stop complaining about me and being a dick.
Note to self: Clamroyale is complaining about me and being a dick.
HOW LITERARY OF ME!
Don't patronize me for swearing on a website where people swear, about an issue that is currently motivating people to swear, saying something that can best be expressed by swearing. Gb2 Amish country if you can't handle the internet.
You felt patronized? Personal problem. I was actually trying to compliment you in a manner I thought would be recognized as such given the nature of our friendship.
I was merely posing a question.
So a kid is suspected of rape, and the news paper reports it. If this is what happened then whats the problem? If this isn't what happened please elaborate further your position on the issue so I can come to a better understanding of the situation. Thank you.
All I'm seeing here is a willingness to condemn the messenger. From what it looks like, the editor knows what his job is.
As for the transparancy of the victim's identity there's no real journalistic regulation barring the publishing of rape victim's names, though it is a highly debated issue its up to the publication's discretion.
I can't speak for Pooter. MY problem was (and is) that the article went into lurid detail about the incident abridging the rights of the victim and, possibly, biasing any jury in this town against a fair trial. Guilty or innocent, he still deserves a fair trial and this article was an example of, IMO, tabloid journalism.
Hmm thanks for the replies...but I'm still not getting it.
Unless they were factually incorrect in their labeling of the suspect/reporting of the story or jumped the gun and automatically attributed guilt on the suspect, it sounds like the KDN was doing what a news paper does...reporting the news.
Also until further substantiated, I doubt the claim that the editor said anything like "lol like I care if I ruin lives whatever to sell papers now gtfo." is near the truth.
The editor said
"I'm not here to make friends, I'm here to sell papers."
If the kid is acquitted, his life in this town is over.
Cry about your newspaper? Hey, all I originally did on this was a shout.
Although I don't read KDN so will not be adding to this, I can agree with some of the in between lines of Pooter's shout.
On a second note... Twitter and Facebook are being blamed by the news industries as "killing it" because everyone gets news faster and for free. This will hopefully be the same concept with this site, SitNews, and KDN. KDN charges to access news online, which is quite lame I must say.. and SitNews manually adds everything through e-mail responses and such (can't instant post), it's a very painful and horrible system.
This is a site where people can access all the information for free, up-to-the-minute, and respond all they'd like..
So, let's hope this becomes a superpower and takes on KDN and SitNews in one way or another ;)
Yeah, it's still the BETA so all this data will be removed by the end of it (except your account info of course). I figured it'd pretty much be the same way KU kind of was but that's fine while I'm still building it.. But the more people we get, the more serious posters will hopefully overpower the flamers (ha).
I'm giving the power to speak to everyone. I'm sure we'll have a lot of both heavy conservative and liberal members of each community blagging their minds away to the community. It's those people I'm assuming will fuel and popularize the site.
One good example is Zig Ziegler (I'll say names). The stuff he gets posted on SitNews enrages me sometimes. It's conservative ignorance at its finest, and yet I can't respond openly and freely (at least not for a couple days until SitNews verifies if it's good enough to be posted.)
My point there was, I'm assuming if the site raises to the popularity I'm hoping for, it will attract heavy attention from people like Zig, the people who follow (his crap), AND FINALLY: the people that are against it and want to be able to say something about it.
I'm not sure if I've even made my point across, too much to say about on the subject..
Nutshell = Serious liberal/conservative/anyone posters + serious commenters to them = visually overpower the crap comments/anger.
The thumbs up/down will hopefully help us filter out flaming and hide it from everyone's view. The system may have to be re-thought in the future, but it should be fine for now.
The community moderates the comments of flamers/trolls/spammers (and hopefully not people they just disagree with, although it happens). The staff gets rid of the rule breaking content and the stuff that needs to be removed to, technically speaking, save our ass.
Exactly. And I feel your pain on Ziegler. He stood up at a school board meeting and suggested uniforms. During the break I told him, "Uniforms sounds great...when do they get the armbands?" He stomped off. Some people just have no sense of humor! ;)
I already know what it's about, there was a case from two people at the highschool where a certain highschooler raped another and the paper went into gruesome detail about it and pretty much exposed who did it. Him and Coyote went to the editor and he pretty much went "lol like I care if I ruin lives whatever to sell papers now gtfo."
Erhh and I just realized I worded that badly, he was being charged with rape, sorry had to fix that line because they haven't proved if he's guilty or innocent. Also to add to this the paper was incredibly skewed to one side of the story IIRC.
And another point of fact, I went to the editor by myself. If Pooter went on his own, he may have info I don't have. But the editor was... indifferent to the chaos he caused with that article which not only biased any potential jury but abridged the privacy of the victim. Typical KDN, really.
