JuneauBroadband began as an answer to Google s RFI. As the awesome community of Juneau explored the possibilities of fiber to the home, support grew and grew for ultra-fast broadband. Volunteers, local businesses, and community organizations joined together to endorse fiber for Juneau, and Juneau for fiber. Today, JuneauBroadband is part of an inclusive conversation about bringing fiber to the homes and businesses in Juneau. Here we share the efforts of hundreds of Juneauites, the support of the City and Borough of Juneau, and the beauty of our chosen home - we hope you will be part of this conversation, and join us in knowing we're the right people in the right place. Fiber for Juneau!-From Juneau Broadband
I hope Juneau gets it, but i really doubt it because of the area its in.
Maybe I'm too lazy to read the site, since I'm not and don't plan to be a Juneauian any time soon... but is this the 100 gbit or whatever Google was bringing to towns? Seems crazy, but it's probably hard to find profit in Alaska.
I read the site. If you read the article you did too, since it's nothing but a no content added paste. Other than what you see here, there's a few letters to google from politicians lying about how great Alaska would be for them to try fiber in.
There's actually a pretty large effort to get fiber service from Google in Anchorage. Wouldn't Alaska present some interesting challenges to Google's service that might help them temper the connection against other problems?
I think that the challenge of creating a 1gbps fiber network for an entire area and the infrastructure needed to support it is a large enough one itself, and that Google is looking for a well-suited place to try this out in more than they are looking to battle-test it at much higher cost. Alaska creates many problems just in getting equipment here. And other stuff. thingssss
